Code of Conduct

Students at Maple Bay Elementary respect and adhere to our school Code of Conduct of Respect Yourself, Respect Others, Respect Learning, and Respect Property. If a child strays, the teachers, staff, and principal work with the student to get them back on track so that everyone can enjoy the learning experience at Maple Bay Elementary.

Creating a Safe Environment

Students are supervised in three areas at both Recess and Lunch.

  • Area 1 Adventure Playground (east side of the school) Kindergarten/Primary play area
  • Area 2 Play area (adjacent to Gym)/Ball Court and Field
  • Area 3 Upper Playground

There is an adult assigned to each one of these areas for supervision.

Outside Supervision – Before and After School

Just a reminder to all parents that supervision is provided outside for 15 minutes before school from 8:05 am - 8:20 am.

After school supervision is provided in front of the school and at the bus lines until 2:45 pm or until both buses have departed.

The playground and field are not supervised at this time. Students cannot be at the adventure playground unless supervised by a parent, guardian or babysitter. Students waiting to be picked up should be in front of the school, up near the bus lines, and not in the parking area. Parents are responsible for their children before and after the stipulated times listed above.

Also a reminder that skateboarding, bike riding and roller blades are prohibited on school grounds for student safety.

Emergency Contact Information

It is vital that we have up to date emergency contact phone numbers for parents, guardians and those designated as emergency contacts. In the case of an emergency, staff contact parents first but an emergency contact for your child is necessary in case we cannot contact a parent. Please note that students can only be released to a parent or someone that the parent has designated as an emergency contact.

Emergency Plan

Maple Bay has an Emergency Plan that contains procedures for the following:

  • power outages/inclement weather
  • disaster preparedness
  • school wide security

General Expectations

Visitors

Any visitor to the school including parents or other relations to a student must report to the Office and sign in.

Lates

Students who are late to school must enter through the main door and check in with Mrs. Cameron (our secretary) before continuing to class. If a student is continually late for school, a phone call will be made to parents.

Leaving the School

During the Day Students leaving the school to go to a medical appointment, go home ill etc. must sign out through the Office on the clipboard for that purpose.

Absences

Please phone the Office if a student will be absent or send a note in the agenda the following day. Long-term absences for illness should be reported to the Office. Please note that although we understand the some families take holidays during the school year, teachers can only provide suggestions for work while students are absent.

Student Illness or Accident

If a student is ill or in an accident, parents will notified immediately. Please note that we cannot provide proper facilities for students who are ill with ‘flu or other contagious infections and that every family needs an emergency contact where the student can be sent under these circumstances. Allergies/Medication Students who have severe or life-threatening allergies should be identified when registering. A chart with photos and information is kept in the staff room and medical room so that all staff is aware. Medication is to be kept in the Office in a secure place or in the case of inhalers, near the student.

Use of Electronics at School Electronics such as cameras, i-pods, disc players should be kept at home unless brought to school with a specific purpose and with the teacher’s permission.

If your child has a cell phone, it is to be registered with the child’s teacher and kept in the backpack at all times. We understand that cell phones are necessary for some families but we would appreciate any messages or contact come through the Office. Mrs. Cameron will inform students of any messages in a prompt manner.

Dress Code and Expectations

The clothing that students wear to school should be appropriate to the activities and the weather. Please ensure that students have two pairs of footwear:

  • outside footwear (shoes, boots, sandals depending on the season)
  • inside shoes (to be worn only inside the school and the gym)

Gym Strip

Students should have a pair of shorts and running shoes for PE classes.

Hats

Hats are not to be worn inside the school.

To and From School

Bus Students

Students riding on either of the two school busses that serve the school are to line up after school in the Kindergarten Courtyard in their grade level. Kindergarten and Grade 1 students will be assigned “bus buddies” in Gr. 6 to ensure that they know what to do. All students who take the bus must have registered with the school district Transportation Department. Bus registration forms are available from the school Office. Students who are accompanying a friend home and who do not regularly ride the bus must also be registered as a bus student or they cannot ride the bus.

Pick Up and Drop off of Students

Parents dropping off or picking up students must use the student drop off lane adjacent to the Bus Zone at the east side of the school or park on Donnay Drive. Parking is not allowed in the drop-off lane and pick-up, drop-off or parking is not permitted in the Staff parking lot with the exception of use of the handicapped parking.

Students who walk or ride bicycles

Students who walk home or ride bicycles are to leave school immediately upon dismissal. It is not permissible for students to stay at school and play unless they have a parent or guardian with them. Older students (Grade 5 and 6) may return to school grounds only if they have been home first and given permission to return by a parent or guardian. Bicycles are not to be ridden on school grounds and are to be walked to the bike racks on the west side of the school. Locks are recommended.
